Sunyoung Kim
Sunyoung Kim is a CD student from South Korea. Ms. Kim completed her
undergraduate studies at Seoul National University in South Korea. She
then worked for 2 years as a deputy director at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Trade. While working at the Ministry, Ms. Kim realized that
commercial issues are rapidly becoming major factors of modern
diplomatic relations. Her interests in studying commercial diplomacy are
to acquire sufficient knowledge of trade-related issues and governmental
policies and to develop skills and strategies so that she can pursue a
career as a trade expert and negotiator with the Korean Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Glenn San-dee Bai
Glenn San-dee Bai is a CD student from Munich, Germany. Mr. Bai
graduated with a bachelor’s degree International Studies from the
Monterey Institute. He will now pursue a Master’s degree Commercial
Diplomacy. He studied at the University of Munich Sinology before coming
to Monterey. He speaks German, English and Mandarin Chinese. Mr. Bai is
currently a research associate for the California-Asia Business Council
(CalAsia) of Sacramento. Additionally, he has interned at
Allianz-Dazhong Life Insurance Co. Ltd., as well as at Schulz, Noack,
Baerwinkel Attorneys at Law, both in Shanghai, this past summer. In this
capacity, he researched the legal framework of the Chinese Foreign
Business Law in regard to the service industry and its changes after
China’s WTO accession. Trade issues with China is Mr. Bai's particular
area of interest. He is particularly interested in market access issues
related to foreign insurance and financial services.
Cara Morrow
Cara Morrow is a CD student from the United States. Growing up in an
Air Force family, Ms. Morrow made nine moves around the US and Asia
before choosing to complete her undergraduate studies in Peace and
Security at the University of California, Davis. As a UC-Davis student,
Ms. Morrow studied political transition in Budapest, Hungary and
European Union foreign policy in Vienna, Austria. She has studied six
languages and is currently working towards fluency in Spanish. Ms.
Morrow spent a year as an intern for the State of California's
International Trade and Investment Agency. She helped plan a business
mission to Argentina and Chile as assistant coordinator to the
Environmental Technology Export Program. This summer, Ms. Morrow hopes
to continue her work with the State of California in the area of
technology export promotion.
Yevgen Bugorsky
Yevgen Bugorsky is a CD student from Ukraine. Mr. Bugorsky completed
his undergraduate studies at Kyiv Institute for Humanities, Department
of International Affairs where he focused on the system analysis of
global security, security structures and conflict resolution in the 21st
century. Mr. Bugorsky is fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, English, and has
basic knowledge of German. His work experience includes: registration
clerk at the Annual Meeting of the EBRD Board of Directors in Kyiv at
the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) 1998;
undergraduate trainee with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine as
Planning Department Head; and writer and translator for the Center for
Peace, Conversion and Foreign Policy of Ukraine (CPCFPU). He also
completed a series of international seminars devoted to the development
of civil society. Mr. Bugorsky's interest in commercial diplomacy is to
develop a strategy to promote Ukraine’s bid for WTO membership.
Timour Karimov
Timour Karimov is a CD student from Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan,
Russia. Mr. Karimov graduated from Kazan State University in 1999 with a
specialist’s diploma in International Relations. He speaks English,
Russian and Arabic. Mr. Karimov worked as a protocol officer for the
Tatarstan Republic President. In this capacity he planned, organized and
supervised programs for the President’s guests and official events
with the President’s participation. Mr. Karimov’s interest in
commercial diplomacy is to help the Tatarstan economy integrate into the
world trading system by promoting trade on an equal level with the
Russian Federation. He is particularly interested in the Arab countries
of the Persian Gulf, and thus would like to further his knowledge by
participating in a related internship.
Saulo Nogueira
Saulo Nogueira is a CD student from Brazil. Mr. Nogueira completed
his undergraduate studies in business administration at the University
of Wales, Cardiff. His languages include Portuguese, English and German.
Mr. Nogueira has interned at the United Nations Industrial Development
Organization, where he developed a comprehensive database on
human-resource development projects of the Organization. Subsequently,
he carried out an internship at the Comprehensive
Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty Organization, where he helped collect internal
financial information for a budget. He also did an internship at Opel
(European branch of General Motors) in the Brand Team of the Marketing
department. He was then hired by the organization to work as a
consultant to build an electronic file of all contracts of the Division,
which is currently being used by Opel management. Mr. Nogueira's
interests are in international trade between Brazil, as well as other
South American countries, and the US. He hopes to intern next summer
either in the Federation of Industries of a Brazilian state, or in an
American exporting organization.
Luis Cueto
Luis Cueto is a CD student from Veracruz, Mexico. He completed his
Business degree at the University Texas, Austin. Mr. Cueto is bilingual
as well as bicultural, having spent significant amounts of time in
Mexico and the US. He expanded his language and cultural skills by
attending a French language program at McGill University in Montreal.
His interests are in ADR, intercultural negotiations, and international
politics and economics. He is also interested in the relationship
between trade and business relations and the environment. Before
attending the Monterey Institute, Mr. Cueto built a successful sushi
restaurant in Veracruz, introducing a new product into a conservative
market. In his work, he recruited, trained, and supervised a successful,
well-integrated team of 27 employees. He has worked with a master
franchise, banks, labor unions, and the Mexican legal system. Mr. Cueto
wishes to pursue a career in which he can best use his cultural,
negotiating, ADR, and business skills.
Kathleen Magee
Kathleen Magee is a CD student from Washington State where she
graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Whitman College. She speaks
Spanish and hopes to use her language and cultural skills in her future
career in the private sector. Ms. Magee interned with the Tacoma Port
Authority and with a shipping company, called Intership, based in San
Juan, Puerto Rico.
Hiroko Tadano
Hiroko Tadano is a CD student from Tokyo, Japan. She completed her
undergraduate studies at Tokyo Kasei University, Tokyo. Her languages
include Japanese and English. Ms. Tadano is interested in the trade
between USA and Japan.
Grigoriy Zadorozhniy
Grigoriy Zadorozhniy is a CD student from Turkmenistan. He completed
his undergraduate studies in Economics and Production Management with a
Diploma with Honours at the Turkmen Institute of National Economy in
Ashgabat. He speaks English, Russian and Turkish. Mr. Zadorozhniy served
as an economist at the USAID Trade & Investment
Project/Turkmenistan. During these three years, he analyzed
Turkmenistan`s foreign trade balance of payments, the territorial and
commodity structure of the foreign trade of Turkmenistan and key
macroeconomic aggregates; participated in analysis of the foreign trade
regime of the country; and conducted surveys of business activity in
Turkmenistan. Mr. Zadorozhniy's interest is to participate in developing
trade promotion between Turkmenistan and CIS countries as well as with
Central Asian countries. Mr. Zadorozhniy intends to intern in the
organization that deals directly with trade promotion activities in
order to gain appropriate knowledge and skills necessary for his future
job challenges.
Chi P. Nguyen
Chi P. Nguyen is a CD student from Vietnam. Ms. Nguyen completed her
undergraduate studies in English Literature and Linguistics at National
University of Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City. She speaks Vietnamese,
English, French, and Russian. Ms. Ngyuen interned for the Women's Union,
Department of International Relations in Vietnam. During the internship,
she had chance to work with commercial contracts and grants concerning
Vietnamese women’s interests. Upon graduation Ms. Nguyen hopes to work
for the Vietnamese Minister of Trade or Department of Planning and
Investment. She is looking forward to an internship with the United
Nations, the WTO or another international trade NGOs.
Andriy Mykytiv
Andriy Mykytiv is a CD student from Ukraine. Mr. Mykytiv graduated
from Academy of Commerce in Lviv with a degree in International Economic
Relations. He speaks Ukrainian, English, Russian and some Slovakian.
During his undergraduate years, Mr. Mykytiv participated in FSA-FLEX
program in and spent the 1994-95 academic year in the US. He also took
courses from Georgetown University AIPES program in Prague, Czech
Republic. Mr. Mykytiv has worked for the American Councils for
International Education, Western Ukrainian Commercial Bank, and for a
small business in Ukraine. His professional areas of interest include
economic reform in transitional economies, foreign direct investment
impact on economic growth and monetary effects of balance of payments.
In the future, Mr.Mykytiv hopes to accomplish internships with World
Bank and the WTO.
Paul Clark
Paul Clark is CD student from Los Angeles, California. Mr. Clark
completed his undergraduate degree in Hispanic Studies at Lewis and
Clark College, in Portland, Oregon. While studying he spent a year in
Mendoza, Argentina. Before enrolling at the Monterey Institute, Mr.
Clark taught English and offered translation services to small
businesses. Currently he is an intern at the Monterey Bay export
Assistance Center and hopes to find a summer internship with the U.S.
Commercial Service.
Jittima Nakamano
Jittima Nakamano is a CD student from Thailand. Ms. Nakamano
completed her undergraduate degree in International Relations at
Chulalongkorn University. She speaks Thai, English and Spanish. Ms.
Nakamano has worked as an international news reporter with a local radio
news center. She also worked for a local newspaper as a journalist at
the International News Desk. In this capacity she had the opportunity to
attend the 1998 Finance and Economic Ministers Meeting of Asia and
Europe as a correspondent. These experiences sparked her interest in
international trade and commercial diplomacy. She intends to intern in
an organization that deals with regional trade, particularly
Asia-Pacific or Asia-Europe.
Alessandra Cortez
Alessandra Cortez is a CD student originally from Brazil. Ms. Cortez
earned her bachelor’s degree at the American University in Paris. She
speaks Portuguese, English and French. Prior to attending the Monterey
Institute Ms. Cortez worked as a project manager at a translation agency
in San Francisco. Ms. Cortez would like to begin her career in the
public sector and then move into private sector. She looks forward to a
career working with both South America and Europe.
James R. Burger
James R. Burger is a CD student from California. Mr. Burger earned
his bachelor’s degree in International Affairs from George Washington
University. He focused on politics, economics and German language. He
received an MA in European Public Affairs from the Universiteit
Maastricht and the European Institute of Public Administration in
Maastricht, The Netherlands. Mr. Burger has professional experience in
both government and non-governmental organizations. In Washington DC,
Mr. Burger volunteered with the Office of Presidential Personnel and
interned at the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies. His
career goals include working in government relations for a multinational
corporation either in the EU or the US.
Mike J. Blakeley
Mike J. Blakeley is a CD student who earned his bachelor’s degree
in Political Science from the University of Oregon. During his senior
year, he completed a 4-month internship in the Washington D.C. office of
Senator Robert Packwood. Upon graduation in 1992, Mr. Blakely joined an
international trading company headquartered in Seattle, Washington,
where he created and managed international trade in the seafood
commodities division. He was promoted to director of the division and
managed an international staff in 3 countries. In 1997, Mr. Blakeley
returned to San Francisco and founded B International, an agency
representing seafood manufacturers and importers in 5 countries. As part
of his work, Mr. Blakeley conducted business in 15 countries, and spent
extensive time in South Africa developing a market for US seafood
products. He continues to run the company today. He also serves as
Student Council Vice President Student Council and the Monterey
Institute.
Yoanna A. Gouchtchina
Yoanna Gouchtchina is a CD student who earned her bachelor’s
degree in Marketing and International Management from University of New
Mexico in 1999. Following graduation Ms. Gouchtchina took a job in
marketing research in Ekaterinburg, Russia for a joint Russian-American
project concerning non-proliferation and conversion of nuclear
technologies. Along with other responsibilities, her work included
maintaining contacts with local government officials, medical
specialists, and Russian nuclear scientists. This experience led her to
develop an interest in a diplomatic career. In addition to pursuing a
Master’s degree in Commercial Diplomacy, Ms. Gouchtchina is pursuing
certificates in Nonproliferation Studies and Conflict Resolution and
hopes to combine all of these skills in her future diplomatic career.
